How To Stand Out As Filmmaker in an Oversaturated Market

Aug 24, 2024

Today, I'm going to share with you my 5-step framework for standing out among the pack.

I've traced all of these steps through my own personal and professional experience going from an entry level filmmaker to an top agency repped director and executive producer in the film & TV industry.

Let's get straight into it.

My 5-Step Framework To Set You Apart

Step 1: Define your niche

Defining a niche in the branded, commercial, and film & TV industry is one of the first, most important steps.

Want to get started?

My 6-Part Framework for Uncovering Your Profitable Niche

You're allowed to reinvent yourself throughout your career, but right now I would recommend sticking with one specific thing.

Step 2: Develop your style

If someone were to ask you what kinds of films you like to make, would you be able to answer?

Your answer should cover genre, topics, theme, or any characteristic of your work that sets you apart.

If you don't have a body of work yet, you can pull inspiration from what you enjoy watching or what you hope to create one day.

The goal here is to be able to succinctly state your answer in a couple sentences.

Step 3: Create a personal brand

Your personal brand isn’t just your image but your story within the industry.

It tells people about who you are.

And, it can show that you are authentic and credible.

Here are a few ways I create and maintain my personal brand:

  • Create a professional website that showcases your skills, experiences, and achievements.
  • Maintain online presence on 1-2 social media platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok.

Social media is how I've gained the most awareness around my personal brand and work.

Step 4: Do killer work

Never half-ass your work.

Consistently deliver top tier results and you will build a reputation in your niche.

You might still be in the beginning phases of your career and working on the basic fundamentals of filmmaking.

Or maybe, you're a seasoned filmmaker with great ideas, but haven't established yourself in this specific niche yet.

Try to determine where you are in your journey, and keep focusing on improving your craft.

Step 5: Be personable

The entertainment industry is built off of relationships.

Protect your reputation at all costs.

Be kind.

Be respectful.

Be professional.

Even if you don't get along with someone.

Action Steps & Summary

Here's how you can apply my 5-step framework and get started today:

  1. Define your niche.

  2. Develop your unique style.

  3. Create a personal brand (and maintain that brand online).

  4. Do killer work.

  5. Be easy to work with.
